Getting Started in Remote Control Aircraft

Minimize

So, now that you have decided to get into the great hobby of RC flight, what do you do next?  You could certainly jump right in and buy a plane and then take it to the field and see what happens.  You could do that, but it may not be the best idea.  RC flight is not hard, but it does take a little bit of practice.  Luckily, in this day and age, there are ways that you can practice, and even crash, without damaging an actual plane.  There are several RC flight simulators on the market that allow you to learn how to fly with none of the risk of damaging a real plane.  Some of the best and most well known are listed below.

RealFlight - This one is one of the best.  It comes with everything you need to get started including a RC controller that you plug into your computer.  It is a very realistic way to learn.

FSOne - This one is a little bity cheaper than RealFlight and comes in a standalone version without a controller and a version with a controller.

PRE-Flight - I have never tried this one, but the website says that it has 3D.  You can download a demo and give it a try.

ClearView - Another one I haven't tried, but let me know how it works if you decide to.

So, after you have become expert at simulators, it is time to try the real thing.  The best idea is to find somebody that already knows how to fly and try it with them on a "Buddy Box".  This is a controller that plugs into another controller with a special cable.  The teacher can give control of the plane to the student and if the student starts to get out of control, the teacher can take over with the flip of a switch.  That way, you can get real world experience without too much worry of crashing.

If you don't know anybody who already flies, contact anybody at the WAM club and we can hook you up with somebody who would be more than happy to help you.
